Scope and Content Lock and bridge, Crinan Canal, Cairnbaan, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built between 1794 and 1809 across a narrow isthmus to allow small trading vessels to avoid the voyage round the Mull of Kintyre. It was designed by John Rennie. This bridge was built in 1871 by P & W MacLellan. This view shows one of the locks at Cairnbaan, with in the background the electrically-operated swing bridge which carries the main Lochgilphead to Oban road over the canal. To the right is the Cairnbaan Hotel. The canal is now used mainly by yachts, but in its day it was an important route for small sailing craft and steam coasters (puffers) trading up the west coast and to the Hebrides. A small steamer on the canal linked steamer services to its ends. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
