Scope and Content Oakfield Bridge, Crinan Canal, Lochgilphead, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built between 1794 and 1809 across a narrow isthmus to allow small trading vessels to avoid the voyage round the Mull of Kintyre. It was designed by John Rennie. This bridge was built in 1871 by P & W MacLellan. This view shows the hand-operated wrought-iron swing span in the open position to allow the passage of a yacht. The bridge-keeper is on the deck of the bridge beside the hand turning gear. This bridge gives access to a private house. The canal is now used mainly by yachts, but in its day the wharf at Oakfield Bridge was busy with vessels trading with Lochgilphead, especially in coal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
