Scope and Content Entrance lock of Caledonian Canal, Corpach, Inverness-shire This is the entrance to the western end of the Caledonian Canal., where it enters the tidal Loch Linnhe. When the canal was completed steamers from Crinan and Oban berthed her to transfer passengers to smaller steamers on the canal. This view shows the lighthouse at the seaward end of the lock, with the lock-keepers' houses to the left. In the background is Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, with its summit in cloud. The sea lock at Corpach was the first on the canal to be completed, in 1812, and was partly excavated from solid rock. The chamber was drained during excavation by a Boulton and Watt steam engine, whose house survived until the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
