Scope and Content Former flax-spinning mill, Milton of Balgonie, Fife This works was established in 1807, and extended c 1840. It closed in 1886. It was powered by water drawn from a weir on the river Leven, a short distance upstream. The mill buildings were ruinous by 1979. This view shows the former wheelhouse on the lade, which runs through the arch at the base of the wall. The sluice controlled the flow of water to a small early 20th century hydro-electric power station. This wheel house is unusually elaborate, probably dating from c1840. The river Leven was one of the most densely utilised rivers in the east of Scotland. This mill was situated just below the point where a long lade from Loch Leven rejoined the river.
