Scope and Content Pittenweem Harbour, Fife This harbour has probably existed since early medieval times, but was rebuilt in the 17th century, and again in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was originally principally a trading harbour for its grain-growing hinterland, but then became a fishing port. This view shows the harbour entrance from the north, with the head of the east pier on the left. The lighthouse sits on the end of the masonry pier extended in the 17th century, rebuilt after a storm in 1702, and extended in concrete in the 20th century. The light on the pole to the right is a leading light, to guide vessels through the harbour entrance. The harbour has been for many years been the main fishing port in Fife, serving a fleet of inshore vessels. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
