Scope and Content St John's Street, Canongate, Edinburgh St John's Street, named after the cross of St John which once stood nearby marking the boundary of Edinburgh and the Canongate, was a very fashionable address in the 18th century. The only remaining house of the 18th-century row that stood on the west side of the street has been restored as the headquarters of the Priory of Scotland of the Most Venerated Order of St John, a 13th-century Order of Chivalry revived in 1947. James Burnett, Lord Monboddo, a kindly but eccentric judge, lived in St John's Street in the 18th century. His 'learned suppers' attracted many of the literati of Edinburgh's 'Golden Age' of intellectual genius. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
