Scope and Content Detail of first-floor window and pistol-loop in north-west wall of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. Most windows in the tower are small, but larger ones, such as this one, light the main first- and second-floor apartments. This window has a roll-moulded sandstone surround and has a relieving arch above. Relieving arches are usually of rough construction and are placed in walls above openings to relieve the opening of the weight above it. Lorimer (1864-1929) added some pistol-loops (below), along with the original ones. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
