Description Belnahua Slate Quarry View of disused upright boiler, schoolhouse in background
Date 1978
Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland
Catalogue Number SC 555653
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content Former slate quarries, Belnahua Island, off Luing, Argyll This island was worked for its slate in the 19th and early 20th century, to the extent that the island itself was almost completely removed by the quarries, the surviving island being composed mainly of slate waste. This view shows a vertical boiler, which probably supplied steam to the steam derrick crane whose remains could be seen nearby. This view shows the boiler from the firebox end, with the firehole to the left, and the cross water-tubes inside. The quarries were worked out before the First World War, and the island abandoned. Much of the metalwork was removed for scrap, but in 1978 enough remained to show how the quarries had been worked. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
