Scope and Content Gravestone of Peter Jeffrey, Abercorn, West Lothian This is the reverse face of a gravestone commemorating Peter Jeffrey, a blacksmith, who died in 1857. His epitaph notes that Peter plied his trade at Hopetoun for 47 years. The horseshoe, hammer and anvil are symbols of Peter's trade as a smith. The crown is a symbol of the Incorporation of Hammermen, craftsmen whose work involved the use of hammer on metal and were granted the use of the symbol on their coats of arms. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
