Scope and Content Bonawe Ironworks, Taynuilt, Argyll The charcoal-fired iron-smelting works at Bonawe, also known as the Lorn Furnace, was founded by the Newland Company of Ulverston in west Lancashire. It operated until the 1870s, Some of the buildings survived in agricultural use. This view was taken during excavation of the area round the base of the furnace. It shows the floor of the casting house as it was when the furnace was abandoned, as revealed by removal of overburden. The tap arch of the furnace can be seen in the background. The molten iron was channelled from the arch into moulds made in the sand on the right. The area to the left was paved as a working area. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
