Scope and Content Part of the South Bridge, Edinburgh The South Bridge is a major urban viaduct built to link the Old Town of Edinburgh with the flat land to the south, from which it is separated by a deep valley. From the start it was intended that the sides be lined with buildings. This view shows the only arch designed to be visible, over the Cowgate, seen here from the east. The buildings which abut the viaduct are clearly evident. The lower arch added on the west side can be seen to the rear. The viaduct was designed by Robert Kay, with advice from Robert Adam, who had put forward an earlier scheme. The cast -iron railings are in the form of halberds, with axe heads, and are sufficiently daunting to deter suicide. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
