The works is sited between the lines to Perth and to Wick and Thurso. This view shows the north front of the works, with the gable-end of the main locomotive repair shop to the right of the office gable, and the two lower stables of the carriage shops to the right. Building of locomotives and rolling stock ceased with the incorporation of The Highland Railway into the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, but the works is still used for the repair of diesel railcars.
