Description Greenock, Graving Dock View from S showing ship in dock

Date 18/4/1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 554108

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Firth of Clyde Drydock, Cartsdyke, Greenock, Renfrewshire This large drydock was built in the early 1960s with Government assistance in the hope of stimulating ship-repair business on the lower Clyde. The dock was acquired in 1969 by the Scott-Lithgow Group. This view shows HMS Invincible, the first of the Royal Navy's small aircraft carriers, under-going post trials inspection. The ship is dwarfed by the dock which was designed to accommodate vessels of up to 150000 tonnes deadweight. The dock has never fully justified its initial construction costs, but has remained a useful facility. In the 1990s it was being used to overhaul large oil drilling rigs. HMS Invincible was built at Barrow by Vickers, and was commissioned in 1980. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
