Scope and Content Kilmun Pier, Argyll This pier was built by David Napier, who was developing a new route from Glasgow to Inveraray and beyond, with steamer to Kilmun, coach to Loch Eck, steamer on Loch Eck, coach to Strachur and ferry to Inveraray. This view shows the stone pier built by Napier, with a wooden head built later to accommodate deeper-draughted vessels. The vessel at the pier is a spare ferry for the Western Ferries service from Hunter's Quay to McInroy's Point, near Gourock. Though Napier's complex route soon failed, Kilmun developed as a resort, and a 'famed Loch Eck Tour' remained popular for many years. Services to the pier from Gourock ended in 1971.
