Scope and Content Hayford Mills, Cambusbarron, Stirlingshire This large complex of woollen mills was founded c1860 by Messrs Smith. It was the largest woollen mill grouping in Scotland north of the Borders. After its closure between the wars it functioned as a barracks, and then as a Government emergency store. This view shows the complex in its unusual isolated rural setting, which made it so suitable for its Government storage use. The mills were all constructed of red and white brick in a style typical of the 1860s. In the late 1990s the mills were being converted into flats, and new houses were being built round the mills, forming a fairly large settlement. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
