Perth, Lower City Mills General View

SC 553391

Description Perth, Lower City Mills General View

Date 1/8/1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 553391

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Lower City Mills, Perth, Perthshire This is a three-storey and attic building, close to the Upper City Mills and to a granary which served them both. The mills made oatmeal, and had a large kiln. They were driven by an unusually large (3.74 by 4.27m) low-breast waterwheel. This view shows the three-bay south elevation of the mills. The wheel is in the lower part of the central bay. The edge of the kiln can be seen on the right, and the granary on the left, with a corner of the Upper City Mills on the extreme left. The City Mills operated into the 1960s, but by 1978 the upper mills had been converted to a hotel, and the lower mills, though intact, were disused, as was this granary. Subsequently the granary was converted to flats by the National Trust for Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
