Scope and Content Bowed-truss road bridge, near Alyth, Perthshire This is a good example of a type of bridge developed in Scotland in the late 1850s, and popular until c1900. They were built in both malleable iron and steel; this one appears to be of steel construction. This view shows the construction of the deck, which consists of a series of brick arches, supported by transverse steel beams, early examples of the type. The style of construction of this bridge suggests that it may have been built in the 1880s or early 1890s, when steel was first being used in bridge building, and when heavy rolled sections were first becoming available.
