Scope and Content Bowed-truss road bridge, near Alyth, Perthshire This is a good example of a type of bridge developed in Scotland in the late 1850s, and popular until c1900. They were built in both malleable iron and steel; this one appears to be of steel construction. This view shows the bridge from the south west. The lightness of the trusses is confirmed by the diagonal external bracing. Note that the deck consists of a series of brick arches, supported by transverse steel girders. The style of construction of this bridge suggests that it may have been built in the 1880s or early 1890s, when steel was first being used in bridge building, and before heavy rolled sections were readily available.
