Scope and Content Threshing barn, Corrachree Home Farm, Tarland, Aberdeenshire This was the threshing barn of a mid-late 19th century steading. It contained a fixed threshing machine made by the Hardgate Iron Works, Aberdeen, probably powered by a small oil engine. The engine had been removed by 1978. This view shows the gable end of the barn. The upper door was used for loading sheaves to be threshed to the point where they could be loaded into the threshing machine. The chimney on the left may have served an oil engine. Fixed threshing machines became obsolete from the 1950s, when combine harvesters, which incorporate threshing machines, became popular. Many barn threshers remained in situ until the space they occupied was needed for other purposes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
