Scope and Content Colinton Manse, Colinton, Edinburgh Colinton Manse stands in the deep valley of the Water of Leith, on the south bank of the river. It was built in 1783, possibly incorporating part of an older building, to the north-east of St Cuthbert's Parish Church, and has several later additions. This plain two-storeyed house, surrounded by lawns and mature trees, has tall prominent chimneys and bay windows on both floors to the left of the doorway. The Reverend Lewis Balfour, grandfather of the author, Robert Louis Stevenson, lived in the manse as minister 1823-60. As a child Stevenson remembered the 'long low dining room' where he played with bricks in the 'great open space behind the sofa'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
