Scope and Content Colinton Dell, Colinton, Edinburgh Colinton Dell, the picturesque wooded valley of the Water of Leith at Colinton, was once lined with working mills which, in the 18th and 19th centuries, employed most of the workforce of the village. It is now a popular spot for picnics and walks. This peaceful river valley, cut out through solid rock by the Water of Leith on its course from the Pentland Hills to the sea at Leith, has remained relatively unspoilt, and provides a natural habitat for a variety of species of birds, plants and mammals. Among the 200 species of plants found along the river are a number of woodland plants, not found elsewhere in the Lothians, which thrive in the humid, lime-rich habitat of Colinton Dell. These include Hart's Tongue Fern, Lady Fern and Prickly Shield Fern. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
