Scope and Content Interior view of St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Colinton, Edinburgh St Cuthbert's Parish Church stands on the north side of the bridge across the Water of Leith in the elbow of the river at Colinton village. The present building dates from 1908, but there has been a church on or near this site for over 900 years. The interior, redesigned in 1908, is a combination of pink sandstone columns with angel capitals, dark woodwork, and pale plaster. The apse, at the east end, is flanked by galleries. The pulpit, oak communion table and marble font all date from 1908. The Reverend Lewis Balfour, grandfather of the author, Robert Louis Stevenson, was minister of St Cuthbert's Church from 1823 until his death in 1860. The author, whose summer retreat was at nearby Swanston village, often used to walk down to the church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
