Scope and Content Colinton, Edinburgh, looking south towards the Pentland Hills The old village of Colinton lay in the valley of the Water of Leith to the south-west of Edinburgh. In the 19th century, Georgian, and later Victorian and Edwardian, development transformed the village into a fashionable place in which to live. Spylaw Street (foreground), with its long row of early 19th-century cottages, formed the heart of Old Colinton. On the ridge above the valley is part of the later development of Georgian and Victorian villas with splendid views to the Pentland Hills. The old village grew up around its parish church, and for centuries prospered as a milling settlement on the banks of the river. Recent development has turned Colinton into an attractive residential suburb, with popular picnic sites and riverside walks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
