Scope and Content Gravestone of Thomas Angus, Abercorn churchyard, West Lothian This is the west face of a gravestone commemorating Thomas Angus and his wife (pictured on the reverse face of this stone), who died in 1720. The inscription records that Thomas was a tenant farmer at Pandevin. Carved on the gravestone are symbols of man's mortality, the hourglass and the skull and cross-bones along with the inscription 'MEMENTO MORI' ('Remember you must die'). A winged cherub symbolises the human soul ascending to heaven. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
