Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating John and Robert Weir, Whitburn churchyard, West Lothian This face of the gravestone (west) commemorates Robert Weir, who died in 1737, aged 76. The crossbones represent death and human mortality. Examples of bones suspended in a ribbon from rings is a feature of gravestones in Peebles-shire. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
