Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating John and Robert Weir, Whitburn churchyard, West Lothian This face (east) of the gravestone commemorates John Weir, a mason. Beneath the short inscription is the portrait of a man, presumably John, wearing a long jacket and hose. In one hand he holds aloft a mason's mell (a special kind of stone cutter's hammer) and a chisel in the other. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
