Scope and Content St Mungo Halls, Ballater Street, Glasgow These halls were built by the United Co-operative Baking Society to house meetings of their members, and social events and concerts. Such halls were common features of co-operative society premises, but these were larger and finer than most. This view shows the exterior of the halls. The eclectic architectural treatment is characteristic both of the period and of the cooperative movement. The tenement to the right and the stables to the left also belonged to the Society. For large functions the kitchens in the halls could be called on to supply food for several hundred guests. The International Co-operative Congress, held in Glasgow in 1913, used these halls, and was one of the largest gatherings held there. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
