Scope and Content Dumbarton Bridge, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire This five-span masonry arch bridge, with segmental arches, was built to span the river Leven, which is tidal at this point. It was widened in 1884, probably by the addition of cantilevered footpaths, and a new reinforced-concrete deck was built in 1934. This view shows the bridge from the south east. Note the semicircular projections above the arched cutwaters, which would originally have formed pedestrian refuges at deck level. The parapet seen here is reinforced concrete of 1934. This was Dumbarton's only road bridge until the 1960s, carrying heavy traffic to Helensburgh and Loch Lomond in the summer months. The Loch Lomond traffic now bypasses the town, and there is a modern bridge for the Helensburgh traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
