Scope and Content Timber treatment plant, Achnacarry, Inverness-shire This is an unusual 'home-made' plant of a type which was a common feature of estate woodworking until central sawmilling made them uneconomic. It has been constructed from two old boilers, the larger one cut open to form a treatment tank. This view shows the treatment tank in its brick setting, with a firegrate at one end and a short chimney at the other. The small egg-ended boiler on the right contained preserving liquid. It probably originally supplied steam to a threshing-mill engine. This plant was probably designed for treating fencing posts and other outdoor timberwork with creosote, a coal-tar by-product. More recently copper compounds have been preferred for anti-rot timber treatment. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
