Scope and Content Victoria Steelworks, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire This works was founded by the Victoria Iron and Steel Co Ltd in 1898. It became part of the Scottish Iron and Steel Co in 1912, and of Bairds and Scottish Steel in 1939. It survived the end of that company in 1967, and was acquired by Colvilles Ltd. This view shows the cooling rack at the end of the primary reduction mill, with lengths of rolled steel waiting to be reheated and re-rolled in the finishing mill. The works closed in 1978 as part of the British Steel Corporation's policy of phasing out small and uneconomic plants. The rolling mill was transferred to Summerlee Heritage, where it is in store.
