Scope and Content Victoria Steelworks, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire This works was founded by the Victoria Iron and Steel Co Ltd in 1898. It became part of the Scottish Iron and Steel Co in 1912, and of Bairds and Scottish Steel in 1939. It survived the end of that company in 1967, and was acquired by Colvilles Ltd. This view shows part of the cooling area for finished sections, made up of perforated cast iron sections. Some of the latter can be seen on the right. The works closed in 1978 as part of the British Steel Corporation's policy of phasing out small and uneconomic plants. The rolling mill was transferred to Summerlee Heritage, where it is in store.
