Description View of headstone of Marion Valence, 1733.

Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 548916

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 4102/10

Scope and Content Reverse face of a gravestone commemorating Marion Valence and William Thorburn, Bowden church, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Marion Vallance who died in 1733 aged 61. Her husband William Thorburn, a 'portioner' or small-holder, erected this stone in her memory, and is also buried here. Carrying a skull and bone, the emblems of death, the angel probably represents the soul of Marion. An hourglass hangs from a ribbon inscribed 'MEMENTO MORI' (Remember you must die) expressing human mortality and the end of earthly life. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
