Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 548911

Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating a miner, Lasswade churchyard, Midlothian The inscription on this stone is badly damaged and it is impossible discern its dedication. Within the upper panel are a pair of engineers or surveyors at work in a coal mine. Tools of their trade surround them; these comprise wedges, picks, shovels and a spoked instrument which is probably a compass of some sort. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
