Scope and Content Workmen pouring concrete into the moulds for the legs of Hutchesontown-Gorbals Comprehensive Development Area (CDA) Area 'C', Glasgow The architect Sir Basil Spence (1907-76) designed Hutchesontown-Gorbals, which was approved in 1960 and built 1962-6. It consisted of two 20-storeyed slab blocks on curving concrete legs and prominent communal balconies. This photograph shows three workmen pouring concrete into a huge mould for one of the elegant, curving legs of the slab blocks. These elegant, curving supports lifted the design of these blocks above the ordinary, emphasising their height. These blocks, though innovative in design, were prey to vandalism. They gradually fell into disrepair, and despite the addition of pitched roofs in 1987, were demolished in 1993. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
