Scope and Content View from south-east showing construction of Hutchesontown-Gorbals Comprehensive Development Area (CDA), Glasgow A large area around Rutherglen Road was demolished in order to construct the many tower blocks that made up the Hutchesontown-Gorbals Comprehensive Development Area (CDA). The main development occurred between 1960 and 1966. This photograph shows Sir Basil Spence's Area 'C' blocks in the centre of the image; two blocks by the Scottish Special Housing Association on the left; and four tower blocks by Sir Robert Matthew on the right. Construction is underway on further blocks. This whole area had been densely packed with rows of run-down four-storeyed tenements. These were swept away in order to make room for an ambitious scheme of mass housing in tower blocks. The ambitious plan hoped to create 'streets in the sky'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
