Scope and Content Thatched cottage, Lanark Road, Juniper Green, Edinburgh Juniper Green, lying between Colinton and Currie, stands in the middle of what was once the Currie Muir. The village, first mentioned in records in 1707, developed into a sizeable community around the mills on the Water of Leith in the 19th century. This low whitewashed thatched cottage dates from the late 18th century, and was probably built for mill-workers or farm labourers. The village grew up along the line of the ancient route of the Lanark Road which runs along the north side of the Water of Leith at Juniper Green. It formed a natural hinterland for the thriving mills, built in restricted positions on the river bank. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
