Scope and Content Almora, No 49 Spylaw Bank Road, Colinton, Edinburgh Spylaw Bank Road climbs from the valley of the Water of Leith at St Cuthbert's Parish Church up the steep hill to Lanark Road. Lined mainly with Victorian and Edwardian villas, it is part of a picturesque development on the heights above Colinton village. This manorial-style villa stands in a large garden with splendid views to the south. Designed by the architect, Robert Lorimer, in 1899, the house has a small porch linking its two gables of differing heights, and a steep red-tiled 'cat-slide' roof. In 1893 Robert Lorimer built a cottage for Miss Guthrie Wright in Pentland Avenue, Colinton, and started a fashion, designing several other large villas in the new development on the Spy Law, the former look-out hill for the village in the valley.
