Scope and Content The former Dreghorn Castle, Colinton, Edinburgh Dreghorn Castle, a 17th-century mansion, was probably built by Sir William Murray, Master of Works to King Charles II. It was one of Colinton's grandest houses, standing in extensive grounds to the south of the village, but was demolished in 1955. The original house, built as a 'manor place', survived within large-scale 19th-century alterations and additions, which gave the house its distinctive castellated appearance. The castle was home to many influential people, including the Trotter family, who bought it in 1797. Its last private owner was Robert Andrew Macfie who became MP for Leith. After his death in 1893, the estate was bought by the War Department. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
