Scope and Content Swanston Village, Edinburgh The tiny village of Swanston lies close to the southern boundary of Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills, surrounded by small wooded areas and open farmland. It is one of Edinburgh's most picturesque villages, and is now a Conservation Area. This group of 18th-century thatched farm workers' cottages, in a little dip among the trees, forms the heart of the village. The houses are built on sloping ground along two sides of a square at the side of the Swanston Burn. In 1761, after lengthy litigation with the local landowner, Henry Trotter of Mortonhall, who had resisted the scheme, water from the burns and springs at Swanston was piped to Edinburgh to augment its water supply from Comiston.
