Scope and Content Merchiston Castle School, Colinton Road, Edinburgh Merchiston Castle School, founded in 1828, was originally housed in Merchiston Castle, a medieval tower-house, once the home of the 16th-century mathematician, John Napier. In 1930 the school moved to new premises in the grounds of Colinton House. This building was built as the War Memorial Hall by the architect, Old Merchistonian Norman Dick c.1930, and forms the centrepiece of the new school in the parkland of Colinton House. The grand entrance portico is supported by four Corinthian columns. Norman Dick, who was refused permission to build a War Memorial Hall at the school's former Merchiston site, eventually built the hall, which commemorates the 176 boys and masters who died in World War I, at the school's new site at Colinton House.
