In 1930 the school moved to new premises in the grounds of Colinton House. This tower-house, now with a concrete dog-leg stair leading to the second-floor entrance, has rubble walls and a corbelled parapet with a turret on its west side. The tower, restored in 1961, now serves as the office of the Principal of the university. In 1828, Charles Chalmers founded a school for boys near Bristo Place. He moved to Merchiston Castle with 33 pupils in 1833 to establish Merchiston Castle School which, 'advanced in number and renown' and later moved to new premises at Colinton House.
