Scope and Content Swanston Farm Steading, Swanston, Edinburgh The little farming community of Swanston lies close to the southern boundary of Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills, surrounded by small woods and open farmland. It is one of Edinburgh's most picturesque villages, and is now a conservation area. The farm steading is part of Swanston Farm, a complex of early 19th-century farm buildings just north of the village. This row of single-storeyed buildings includes a steep-slated gable over an arched entry to a rubble-built courtyard. In the 19th century the farm produced, in rotation, potatoes, turnips, and beans; wheat, barley, hay and oats. It also had fields for sheep and cattle, and employed ploughmen and labourers, as well as women and boys, hired on a casual basis to do hoeing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
