Scope and Content Swanston Village, Edinburgh, before restoration in 1964 The little farming community of Swanston lies close to the southern boundary of Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills, surrounded by small woods and open farmland. It is one of Edinburgh's most picturesque villages, and is now a conservation area. In the heart of the village is a group of 18th-century farm workers' cottages, built facing each other. The two-storeyed house at the end of the group is the schoolhouse. The village of Swanston grew up in the early 18th century around a farm. It originally consisted of ten thatched cottages, with bare earth floors, and each with one main room, a privy and an adjacent 'midden' equal in size to the main room.
