Scope and Content Gateway and lodge, Lauriston Castle, Cramond Road South, Edinburgh Lauriston Castle, a late 16th-century tower-house built for Sir Archibald Napier, stands in wooded grounds with uninterrupted views over the Firth of Forth. The house was extended in the 19th century, and was bequeathed to the nation in 1926. The lodge house, with broad eaves and two tall chimneys, was designed by William Playfair in 1846. Beside it, a pair of sphinxes flank the driveway which leads through the extensive grounds to the castle. In 1926 the house, contents and grounds were left to the nation by the wife of William Robert Reid, the last owner of the house. They were bequeathed 'for the use of the public in all time coming and the intelligent education of the public taste'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
