Scope and Content The Old Cramond Bridge (Old Cramond Brig), Cramond, Edinburgh Old Cramond Bridge, which once carried the turnpike road from Edinburgh to Queensferry, spans the River Almond about a mile upstream from Cramond village. It dates from c.1500, but was rebuilt in stone in 1622. The stone bridge, now restricted to pedestrian access, crosses the river in three pointed arches and heavily buttressed piers. The cottage at the east end served as a toll house from the beginning of the 19th century. The River Almond, shown on John Philp Wood's map of 1794 as 'Amon Water', derives from the old word for river, 'Amond', and was probably referred to by people living on its banks as 'the river'. Cramond comes from 'caer Amond' or 'the fort on the river'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
