Scope and Content Duddingston House, Milton Road West, Duddingston, Edinburgh Duddingston House, the former manor house of Duddingston Village, has been described as one of the finest 18th-century houses in Britain. It was designed by Sir William Chambers for the 8th Earl of Abercorn, and completed in 1768. Built in an austere Classical style, the house is a two-storeyed block, topped with a balustrade, and with tall corniced windows on the ground (principal) floor. Its main feature is the large pedimented portico supported by four fluted Corinthian columns. The architect, Sir William Chambers (1723-96), designed many notable buildings, including the townhouse of Sir Lawrence Dundas in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh in 1771 (now the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland), and Somerset House, London in 1772.
