Scope and Content The original foreshore at Cramond Village, Edinburgh Cramond, a picturesque village at the mouth of the River Almond, lies on the shores of the Firth of Forth. It developed as an 18th-century industrial village, but its origins date back to the 2nd century AD when it was the site of a Roman fort. The quietly flowing River Almond enters the Firth of Forth at Cramond, and the wide stony foreshore here was a popular spot long before a promenade was built in 1935. A ferryboat carries passengers across the river for a small charge. A ferry, first started in 1556, crosses the river to the Dalmeny estate on the opposite bank. The estate privatised the service in 1622, when the Old Cramond Bridge, a mile upstream and the only other way of crossing the river, was rebuilt in stone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
