Scope and Content Cramond foreshore, Cramond Village, Edinburgh Cramond, a picturesque village at the mouth of the River Almond, lies on the shores of the Firth of Forth. It developed as an 18th-century industrial village, but its origins date further back to the 2nd century AD when it was the site of a Roman fort. The promenade, which runs along the river as it enters the Firth of Forth, was built in 1935, and offers delightful views over to Cramond Island and the hills of Fife beyond. The neat row of mill-workers houses (right) were built c.1780. The Romans came to Cramond c.142 AD and established a fort. It was ideally suited to their requirements: local stone was plentiful for building; the land was fertile for cultivation; and the mouth of the Almond provided sheltered mooring for their boats.
