Scope and Content The foreshore at Cramond, Edinburgh Cramond, a picturesque village at the mouth of the River Almond, lies on the shores of the Firth of Forth. It developed as an 18th-century industrial village, but its origins date back to the 2nd century AD when it was the site of a Roman fort. The River Almond broadens out into a little tidal harbour, leaving a rocky foreshore between high and low tides. The neat row of whitewashed houses, built in the 18th century for mill-workers, overlooks a broad promenade which is kept free of traffic. The harbour at Cramond, where boats once brought in iron ore and took out nails, spades, hoes, chains and anchors from the iron mills upstream, now offers moorings for yachts and sailing events hosted by the Cramond Boat Club.
