Scope and Content Tarbat Church and churchyard, Portmahomack, Ross and Cromarty Although this church dates to 1756, there has been a church on this site from 1255. It seems likely there were earlier religious settlements here, as the remains of what may be an Early Christian monastic vallum have been found around the church. This disused T-plan church, which is orientated east-west in the medieval fashion, incorporates a medieval vaulted crypt. The exotic belfry, which probably dates to the late 17th century, is ogee-shaped and each face has tiny lucarnes, or gabled vents. It is possible the belfry was designed to be a sea-mark, a feature which could be identified by sailors. It may have contained a small beacon (light) to enable it to be seen in the dark.
